Carnival of Animals: Xi Xi’s Animal Poems (Bilingual Edition)
Hong Kong up-and-coming artists have been invited to draw for Xi Xi’s latest collection of poems “Carnival of Animals”. The illustration for the poem 'It Lives in a Five-Star Hotel' is created by Ko Lap.
Interactions between living creatures in this poem waver between reality and imagination, which inspired the painter to try and find out what reality is.
Is it the flea or the lion that is the authority? Which is real in his own eyes and in others' ?
To the flea, subjective reality is realer than objective reality, and happier. Then, is belief the source of happiness?
By first pouring colours onto the canvas the painter sought a subconscious, uncontrollable, heaven-willed outpour that would spread out like fate.
Starting there he wished to explore purer reality, for pure hearts inter-connect in art and invariably strike a chord with the reader.
