Cantonese in Hong Kong: An Exploration of the Past 200 Years
"Cantonese in Hong Kong: An Exploration of the Past 200 Years" is a selection of a series of linguistic articles written by Professor Samuel Cheung over the years, describing in detail the various linguistic phenomena of early Cantonese, and explaining the various changes in Hong Kong Cantonese from the 19th century to the 21st century. The early Cantonese in Hong Kong came from Guangzhou but it gradually parted ways with the Cantonese in Guangzhou after mid-20th century and gradually became a language of its own. Nowadays, the vast majority of Hong Kong's population speak Cantonese as their mother tongue, and Cantonese is the main language of communication in social activities. Cantonese in Hong Kong uses a large number of foreign words, some of which have become part of the local vocabulary, and many new changes have taken place in the phonetic and grammatical levels.
