Work by Ko Lap: Illustration of Eileen Chang
That was 1939, Eileen Chang was in her straight hair. Her experience in Hong Kong was crucial to her writing career, Hong Kong was the starting point and a lifetime inspiration.
Eileen Chang’s memory of Hong Kong was purple. In this painting, Ko Lap captures a younger Chang, rather than the iconic chic image of her after she became famous. He depicts several scenes that struck her the most when she was in wartime Hong Kong, one in particular, has replayed again and again in her novels—she was reading in a library of the University of Hong Kong, indifferent to the bombing around her.
The size written above is the size of the original painting.
