Everyday Architecture in Context: Public Markets in Hong Kong (1842-1981)
As one of the earliest public buildings built by the British after they set foot in Hong Kong, the public market was mainly designed and built by the Public Works Department during the colonial period. Over the years, from classical to modern, the architectural style of the market has responded to the social needs of different eras, and its management, distribution and functional changes have also reflected the city's history and social changes.
This book selects daily but unique public markets for longitudinal research. By extensively referring to first-hand historical materials, tracing the development track of street market architecture in the colonial period, and sorting out the social, political, and economic context behind it, the author connects the history of architecture with the history of Hong Kong for readers to re-understand "market".
