Wan Sik Hong Kongers economic survival post 2nd World War
‘Wan Sik’- to search for mere morsel, has been used as a standard term for Hong Kongers, meaning to earn one’s living. From being Coolies, Manure Collectors, Streetside Sing Song Performers, Kung Fu Demonstrators, sellers of stinky Tofu, of animal offal and rice congee, Hong Kongers found numerous ways to survive in the aftermath of the Second World War. Selling their family recipes, their skills, their talents and sheer hardwork, their aim was to ‘Wan Sik’. Some of these vendors developed into large business enterprises, while some of them disappeared. We can trace in this book the livelihoods of these people in times of adversity, and get a glimpse of the economic development of an international city and the remarkable resilience of the Hong Kong people.
